The Organization of Sierra Leoneans in Sweden proudly hosted a landmark event featuring Her Worship, Mayor Denise Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr of Freetown. On June 7th, 2020, Mayor Aki-Sawyerr delivered an inspiring and insightful lecture in Stockholm, Sweden, titled “The End of Slavery and the Foundation of Freetown.” This event was a key highlight of the organization’s 20th-anniversary celebrations and drew attention from African scholars, strategic partners, African ambassadors in the Nordic region, and members of the Sierra Leonean community in Sweden. The lecture aimed to provide an African perspective on the harrowing era of the slave trade and the establishment of Freetown as a Province of Freedom.
A Captivating and Inspirational Lecture
Mayor Aki-Sawyerr’s delivery was nothing short of captivating. She skillfully illuminated the complexities of the British slave trade and its profound socio-cultural impact on Sierra Leone’s national identity. Her articulate, knowledgeable, and engaging presentation offered an inspirational narrative that deeply resonated with the audience. One attendee aptly described it as “an authentic perspective that uncovers the real truth.”
Given her ancestry, directly linked to the resettled slaves known as the Krios of Freetown, Mayor Aki-Sawyerr navigated through the journey of the freed slaves repatriated from the Americas and resettled in Freetown in the 1700s. She emphasized that African history belongs to Africans and must be told by Africans themselves, highlighting the importance of owning and sharing our narratives.
Promoting Sierra Leone’s Cultural Heritage
Established in 2004, the Organization of Sierra Leoneans in Sweden is a non-political and non-ethno-religious organization dedicated to creating a platform where all Sierra Leoneans feel at home. The organization assists its members with integration into Swedish society, supports them in times of need, promotes Sierra Leone cultural heritage, and contributes to the country’s socioeconomic development. This event was perfectly aligned with these goals.
The organization has consistently delivered substantial support to Sierra Leone over the years, from aiding schools and health centers to supporting the fight against the Ebola outbreak and providing medical equipment. The organization played a pivotal role in urging the Swedish government to increase its support to Sierra Leone during the Ebola crisis.
A Milestone Event
The seminar was part of the 20th-anniversary project activities funded by Stockholm’s municipal council under the project name “Paddle Cultural Festival.” This initiative aims to foster a connection between the cities of Stockholm and Freetown and to showcase Sierra Leone’s rich cultural heritage. The event provided an opportunity for Mayor Aki-Sawyerr to connect with other leaders, including African diplomatic representatives in the Nordic region, Swedish officials, and members of the Sierra Leonean community, raising awareness of the tragic history of the slave trade and celebrating the resilience of the Sierra Leonean people.
Mayor Aki-Sawyerr’s participation in the event, despite her busy schedule, was a significant milestone for the organization. Her presence added immense value to the organization’s profile. The Sierra Leonean community and other attendees expressed heartfelt gratitude for her participation.
This seminar exemplified the core values of the Organization of Sierra Leoneans in Sweden, reaffirming its commitment to promoting Sierra Leone’s cultural heritage and supporting its people both at home and abroad. The event was a testament to the power of unity, cultural pride, and the enduring spirit of Sierra Leone.
